My first visit to Strathcona Park Lodge was in August 1982, when I was 16. My cousin Brad Mielke was working at the Lodge as a chef for the summer. I returned as a volunteer in 1989 when I was 23. I stayed from Aug 1989 through January 1990. My job was in the kitchen doing meal prep and dishes, and also in the dining room, serving food. My only remuneration was room and board.

I learned to rock climb while at the Lodge, an activity I still enjoy. I also gained confidence and developed the ability to step outside my comfort zone and meet new people. My experience at the Lodge made me realize that life is so much more than just the pursuit of a paycheque.

Memorable moments:

Hiking with Dart, the black lab -Hugs from Karen’s black cat, Little Bear – Nancy’s cooking – Brad’s cooking – Taking the time each evening to stop, sit still, and watch the sun set; it became the most important part of my day – Camping, kayaking, and canoeing – Learning to rock climb – Bracing morning swims in the lake – The view from my little cabin – The blinding darkness and silence of the night when the generator was shut down each evening; initially unnerving to a city kid like me used to light pollution and background noise – Falling in love – Tie-dyeing t-shirts – .Playing hackey-sack – Salmon bakes and toga parties – Percy Dewar, cougar man – Marvelling at the ease with which Raymond and other experienced kayakers performed Eskimo rolls – Stargazing.
