Strathcona Park Lodge & Outdoor Education Centre (SPL), has led the way in outdoor education since 1959. Today we combine outdoor education for school groups with resort offerings for a unique environment. Join our vibrant community of outdoor enthusiasts, living and working in an outdoor adventure seeker and nature-lover’s paradise!

Most of our staff live on site and pay between $12 and $15 per day for expenses. Our food is wonderful - from scratch, using many local ingredients; our staff accommodation simple and rustic. Come learn, share and experience! We offer a healthy and respectful work environment, access to countless outdoor activities and incredible people.

Front Desk Staff
As Front Desk Staff, you will be part of a central hub for the Lodge’s activities, and provide information and service to guests and potential guests regarding SPL and surrounding area. You will also assist with check in and check out, our small store, and night audit.

Job Skills and Requirements:
• Have good communication skills and multi-tasking abilities
• Enjoy talking with people and helping them plan their adventures
• Speak, understand and write well in English (a second language is valuable)
• Maintain a commitment to detail and follow-through
• Be community minded and self-motivated
• Be computer and internet proficient
• Be trustworthy (confidentiality) and accountable (handling money)
• Have “Serving It Right” certificate (preferred)

Assistant Housekeeping Manager
As Assistant Housekeeping Manager, you will work with the Housekeeping Manager to motivate staff to maintain and ensure high standards of cleanliness and help create a feeling of pride and team effort. You will work directly with the housekeeping staff (both cleaning as well as inspecting rooms), and, on the days the Housekeeping Manager is off, you will be in charge of the housekeeping department.

Job Skills and Requirements:
• Be able to deal with group dynamics
• Be physically fit to work in a relatively rugged terrain
• Experienced in housekeeping and in managing staff (preferred)
• Outgoing personality with interest in the outdoors

Housekeeping Staff
As Housekeeping Staff you will be responsible to make public areas, guest rooms and cottages beautifully clean. In some cases, you may also be responsible for some light grounds keeping/maintenance around the cottages.

Job Skills and Requirements:
• Be adaptable, given the wide range of accommodation, and able to work both as part of a team and independently.
• Be courteous and helpful to our varied clientele (school groups, international tourists, adventurers)
• Be physically fit, to meet the demands of the job in our rugged, hilly terrain, and physically flexible (making beds in tight spaces)
• Have some light maintenance skills (preferred)

Child Care Provider
As child care provider you will be taking care of a 10-year old girl and an 8-year old boy. This part time job is to be combined with a housekeeping position (number of hours in each position may vary per week).

Job Skills and Requirements:
• Outgoing, enthusiastic, outdoor-minded
• Be able to come up with numerous ideas for activities

Chef de Cuisine
As Chef de Cuisine you will be in charge of the daily operation of the kitchen. This position is mainly hands on cooking, assisting the Executive Chef in providing healthy menu options for our guests and SPL team members. Creativity is a must! We use mainly local vegetables delivered directly to us from farms. Our main focus is organic local vegetarian well balanced options, and we also use local meats like bison, wild salmon etc…As we follow the growing season the Chef de Cuisine has to be comfortable adapting using the ingredient on hand. This is a great opportunity for a young and talented cook willing to prepare alternative meals in a large volume operation. You will have a great deal of personal input in our newly renovated kitchen, surrounded by a creative kitchen team ready to share and learn the love of healthy food. Our main clientele is children, and we take pride in serving them the highest quality ingredients. During the summer we also run the Canoe Club Café. This summer our Executive Chef intends to create a local organic in season Trattoria served family style with luxury flair! This will generate many opportunities for you to create and play with fresh ingredients.

Job Skills and Requirements:
• Red Seal or equivalent experiences (will consider third year red seal apprentice)
• Food Safe certification
• Great knowledge of vegetarian food and nutrition (including allergy)
• Interest in alternative diets like Raw Food, Vegan, macrobiotic, gluten free etc
• Large buffet experience is preferred
• Commit for the full season (April to November)

The Most important qualification for this position is to be very enthusiastic about Fresh Food! We offer:
A positive low stress kitchen atmosphere (with a view of the lake and mountains!)
A healthy life style…yes! It is possible for a chef!

Cook
As Cook you will cook for large group buffet (e.g. school groups) and a la carte, as a line cook when designated, either with senior chefs or taking lead responsibility on a shift. In most cases a team approach is taken, which includes some working in food preparation, dishwashing and clean-up.

Job Skills and Requirements:
• Be able to both give and take direction, as required, and work as part of a team
• Have Food Safe, banquet and a la carte line experience (all required)
• Have baking experience (preferred)
• Be knowledgeable about different diet requirements (preferred) and/or willing to learn

Dining Service Staff
As Dining Service Staff you will provide different types of service (buffet, a la carte, bar, special events/weddings) in our various en site venues (Whale Room, The Canoe Club, High Bracer, Barn and Beach). You will work well as part of a team, encourage healthy eating, and enjoy discussing the day’s adventures with guests.

Job Skills and Requirements:
• Enjoy the energy of school groups
• Have a ready smile and be welcoming and personable with guests
• Have Serving it Right Certification
• Have experience serving (preferred)
• Assist from time to time with other related duties in the kitchen and clean-up.

Maintenance Staff
SPL is ‘off the grid’ and has its own hydro plant, alternative energy supplies, generator, small logging and milling operation and septic systems. As Maintenance staff you will assist in repairing and replacing the various systems and our 50 year old physical plant.

Job skills and Requirements:
• Be skilled in various building trades (electrical, plumbing, painting, construction, septic, water, etc.) and/or have a ticket in one of them;
• Be a self-starter and organizer, able to accept direction and to supervise others;
• Act as a general contractor, supervisor or labourer as the job requires.

Buffet Attendant
As buffet attendant, you will help servers set up the buffet, do light food prep such as cutting fruit/vegetables for the buffet, maintain the buffet during service hours, undo the buffet after service, cleaning duties and washing dishes.
 
Job Skills and Requirements:
• Be out-going, able to multi-task, team oriented ,willing to learn about healthy and local food, ready to work in the coolest kitchen on the island!
• Be friendly with guests and from time to time assist the Dining Staff.
• Food safe certification preferred, but can be completed upon arrival.

Outdoor Education Instructor
We are currently seeking instructors for our 2010 season. Outdoor education is a rewarding field that requires creative, inspiring individuals with an outdoor background keen to share their passion with others. We offer quality outdoor education and adventure experiences to people of all ages. In the spring and fall seasons we offer primarily school programs, typically 5 days in length, and in the summer season we offer programs for youth, adults, families and international adventure tourism guests. Activities include: canoeing, kayaking, rock climbing, high ropes courses, zip lines, interpretive walks, hiking, minimal impact camping, environmental education, backpacking, mountaineering, canoe tripping, sea kayaking, whitewater canoeing and kayaking.

Minimum requirements: 40hr Wilderness First Aid, CPR C, satisfactory criminal record check, legally able to work in Canada.

Additional preferences: 80hr WFA, canoe instructor, sea kayak guide, SRT, life guarding, ability to instruct in French, Class 4 DL, Outdoor Education training, certificate, diploma or degree, teaching experience, extensive personal outdoor experience.

Closing date for spring season: February 15, 2010. Summer and fall season applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis.
