Orcas in Johnstone Strait

JOHNSTONE STRAIT DAY TRIPS

Experience the rich marine life of Johnstone Strait with a day trip on a tour boat. Depart from Campbell River, Sayward, or Telegraph Cove; choose from the thrill of a zodiac or the comfort of a mothership - we can help arrange a tour to remember!

Most tours operate from late spring well into the fall, and late July to September is the best time to see the resident orcas. Other possibly wildlife sightings include, seals, sea lions, harbour porpoises, dolphins, bears, bald eagles and seabirds, and much more!

We can help arrange your tour as part of your stay with us - call us at 250.286.3122 or
email.

OrcasJohnstone Strait is famous for its resident population of Orca whales and abundant marine life. Kayakers keep a respectful distance; however, the whales often approach the kayaks for a thrill which is incomparable! Kayak strokes and rescue techniques are practiced in SPL’s protected paddling bays prior to every kayak trip - a good refresher for experienced and beginner kayakers alike.

Day 1 Arrive at Strathcona Park Lodge between 4:00 and 5:00 p.m. Relax, settle into your room and swim in the lake. At 5:00, meet your instructor and group. Dinner. After dinner jump into the kayaks to practice your skills (strokes, rescue techniques and safety procedures) in the sheltered waters of Upper Campbell Lake. Complete out-trip preparations.

Day 2 After breakfast, pack up and leave for Johnstone Straits in SPL transport. Lunch and load your kayak before venturing onto the water.

Days 3,4, & 5 If you have ever camped on B.C.’s beaches you will know that it gets better and better as you get used to the camping routines and develop awareness of the uniqueness and beauty of your surroundings. Expect to see wildlife - unfortunately we cannot guarantee the Orcas! Seals, porpoises, sea lions, other whale varieties, bald eagles and many marine birds also frequent the area. Lessons on navigation, ecologically friendly No Trace camping, camp crafts and outdoor cooking are all part of the experience. Although the Straits can be busy in the summer, we still endeavour to camp in isolated spots. Sometimes the Orcas will come and visit during dinner...

Day 6 Return via van to SPL. Be treated to a hot shower, a comfortable room and a great dinner with your fellow adventurers.
