Students will take part in trust and communication activities, set goals for the remainder of their program and visit the Low Ropes Course.
SPECIALTY PROGRAMS
Specialized programs allow students to focus on a specific subject or outdoor pursuit. These programs include whitewater and ocean paddling, multi-day canoe and backpacking expeditions, rockclimbing, environmental education, leadership, and local culture to name a few. For a full range of specialty program options, please contact Strathcona's Program Manager.
Combined Canoe/Hike
The Canoe/Hike program gives groups the best of both water and land expeditions. After paddling to the destination of choice, groups then hike amongst the mature forests, abundant wildlife and alpine lakes.
Backpacking and Mountaineering
Introductory Hikes along gentle trails to campsites within close proximity to the Lodge provide students with a gentle introduction to backpacking. Roger's Ridge and Camp One offer spectacular views with minimal effort.
Easy to Strenuous Hikes on the well-maintained trails of Strathcona Provincial Park take students into the true wilderness of Vancouver Island. Trails follow rivers and ridges and can lead groups through old-growth forests, alpine tundra and glacier-fed lakes. The Elk River Trail and Bedwell Trails are two of the more popular hiking choices.
Mountaineering Expeditions can climb to over 2000 metres, offering students incredible vistas of the peaks and lakes of surrounding Strathcona Provincial Park. These trips are more strenuous and require two or more days of hiking. King's Peak, Mt. Myra and Mt. McBride are a few of the options available for the students to climb.
Canoe and Kayak Trips
Upper Campbell and Buttle Lakes provide over 40 kilometers of safe freshwater paddling with maintained Provincial Park campsites every few kilometers for canoe and kayak expeditions. Groups have a variety of destination options surrounded by old-growth forests, hiking trails, rivers and creeks. Afternoon winds often allow groups to "travel under sail" down the lake.
Ocean Paddling in the protected waters and exposed coast of Nootka Sound will take groups to sandy beaches and pristine forests where they may view eagles, bears, seals, whales and other marine life in their natural habitat. You may also visit Friendly Cove, where Captain Cook first landed, to view First Nation artifacts.
The Brewster Lakes provide a classic canoe trip by paddle and portage. After being taken to their drop-off, the group is self-reliant as they paddle and portage (from 0.2 -2.0 km in length) approximately 50 km before returning to the Lodge.
Whitewater Kayak and Canoe
A progression from basic skills taught in our protected paddling bays to the grade 1 or 2 levels on the Campbell or Gold Rivers. A low student-to-instructor ratio and a controlled whitewater environment allows students to gain skills and confidence.
Rock Climbing
After reviewing the basics on Strathcona's indoor climbing walls and three rock bluffs, the group will spend two or more days at Crest Crags refining their rock climbing skills. Students will learn climbing and rapelling techniques from experienced rock climbing specialists.
