SCHOOL TRUSTEES SEMINARS HELD AT STRATHCONA PARK Lodge
School Trustees Environmental Workshop February 6-9th 1975
“Super exciting…simply fantastic…excellent food…really enjoyed it…got a lot out of it.” These comments summarize the feelings of the twenty Trustees who attended the workshop. Most of their time was spent in panel discussions with teachers who have successfully run outdoor education classes. Such well known environmental educators as Dale Kelly from Campbell River, Peter Croft from Nanaimo, Ed Dowling from SFU, Fred Gornall from UBC, Bob Mills from Campbell River and elementary school principal Ron Leversage provided through round-the-table discussions some insights into the problems of financing, transportation and teacher’s responsibilities.
The Campbell River Courier noted that the trustees were from 17 provincial school districts. All the participating trustees who were interviewed by the Courier were most impressed with the workshop and with the facilities and programs available for outdoor environmental education. A random sampling of trustees comments “One of the best courses I’ve attended as a trustee.” “A field much neglected”. “ We should give any teacher time off with pay to go to a teachers’ outdoor education course.” Like to see more money available for this type of program.” Read more
